January is award time for authors and illustrators of children’s books. Each year, at the American Library Association Midwinter meeting, committees announce their selections for this year’s winners of prestigious children’s awards.
This year’s winners were announced January 23, 2012 in Dallas, TX.
John Newbery Medal - honors the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children
Honor Books:
- Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai
- Breaking Stalin's Nose by Eugene Yelchin
Winner:
- Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos
Caldecott Medal - honors the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children
Honor Books:
- Blackout written and illustrated by John Rocco
- Grandpa Green written and illustrated by Lane Smith
- Me … Jane written and illustrated by Patrick McDonnell
Winner:
- A Ball for Daisy written and illustrated by Chris Raschka
Geisel Medal - honors the authors and illustrators of the most distinguished contribution to beginning reader books.
Honor Books:
- I Broke My Trunk! written and illustrated by Mo Willems
- I Want My Hat Back written and illustrated by Jon Klassen
- See Me Run written and illustrated by Paul Meisel
Winner:
- Tales for Very Picky Eaters written and illustrated by Josh Schneider
